Get Great Advice On Home Improvement Projects | Just What Are ...

It is well worthwhile to come up with plans for any major home improvements in order to avoid making an upgrade that is unsafe. The cost is worth it just for the peace of mind it will give you! It will also make it easier to prove to potential buyers that the upgrades were done right when you are ready to sell your home.

Prior to any interior painting, wipe them down with a slightly damp cloth to get rid of dust, dirt and oils that may be sitting on your walls. This allows the paint to adhere to the wall and might even spare you the hassle of applying an additional coat of paint or frequent touch-ups.

Try composting to help reduce the waste your house produces. It is simple to start a composting pile by setting aside a spot in your yard and placing used coffee grounds, vegetable peels and eggshells into it. This compost pile lowers the quantity of your trash, which can help save your money if you pay by the bag for your waste removal service.

Wallpaper and varnish lets you make a quick and easy back-splash in your kitchen. Begin by purchasing wallpaper with a design that you love. Measure the wall space you have and cut a larger paper. Put on the paste and wait until it gets tacky to the touch. Hang your wallpaper and then smooth out bubbles. Then, you are ready to trim those edges to get the best fit. Once the wallpaper sets, you can use a brush to apply varnish. Have fun with your brand new, inexpensive back-splash.

When pre-planning your project, define a space where you are comfortable to place the resulting debris. You will create a giant mess, and you have to get rid of it. Your project will go more smoothly (and be safer to work on!) if you set aside a place for debris in advance instead of letting it pile up and get in the way.

Plan any landscaping to complement your home. A patio and garden that match your house?s style will be a coherent, integrated overall look, but when you clash styles, it may look unplanned and unattractive.

Paint your home?s entrance and get a newer welcome mat. Your front entrance is the portal to your home and it is the first impression that guests get of your home. A few nice touches, such as an attractive plant or a charming welcome mat, serve to make a great impression on people coming to your home.

Turn off the water prior to renovating a kitchen or bathroom. There are all too many homeowners out there who have had to deal with expensive, disastrous flooding because they forgot this fairly commonsense precaution.

There are many things that ?home improvement? means and most anyone can afford to do. You may not have the money to give the home a complete overhaul, but you can give it a face lift by undertaking one smaller project at a time.

One home improvement project that can make a dramatic difference in your home?s appearance and attractiveness is to go for a full exterior paint job. Exterior paint can greatly improve the look and value of your home. With the right color and look, you might think you got a new home!

Some home improvement projects are harder than others. In fact, some jobs may seem simple to complete. However, if you don?t know how to do them correctly, you can cause damage to your home. What you have just read above offers some great improvement tips. Utilize them to your best benefit.

HashTip collects and enhances tips from Facebook and Twitter friends

Surfacing the long-lost tips from people you trust is the promise of newly launched startup HashTip.

HashTip is a social network and content aggregator that collects, stores, and categorizes the tips previously posted by your friends on other services. The company ultimately aims to simplify the decision-making process around products, services, and activities by appending extra social insight to the nuggets it surfaces.

?People who are confused and frustrated with numerous options and a deluge of information on products and services are looking for a platform that can simplify all three aspects of a decision-making process: narrowing down options, deeper research on selected options, and finding the best price for the chosen option,? HashTip co-founder and CEO Rohit Vashisht explained to VentureBeat. ?Most people perform these steps offline and online, spending hours to make the final decision.?

The startup?s best asset is its ability to grab status updates on Twitter and Facebook with the #tip hashtag, pull them into HashTip, and then tack on all relevant review data from places like Amazon, Yelp, and Rotten Tomatoes. The company can also track down daily deals associated with tips to help members save as they revisit friends? recommendations.

But HashTip, at first glance, looks overwrought and lacking in a real answer to the, ?Okay, I?ve found a great tip, now what?? question. There?s far too many icons mushed together in a muddled interface for the first-timer to understand why she should come back.

That?s not to say HashTip is doomed to irrelevance. The young company will need to move away from the tired social network design to something a bit more novel, focus on mobile discovery, and do more to showcase the underlying technology should it wish to win over web folks.

Edison, New Jersey-based HashTip has raised $200,000 in seed funding.

HashTip is one of 80 companies chosen by VentureBeat to launch at the DEMO Spring 2012 event taking place this week in Silicon Valley. After we make our selections, the chosen companies pay a fee to present. Our coverage of them remains objective.

Egypt's open presidential race polarizes nation

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's wide-open presidential election, which was in its second day of voting Thursday, is showing how deeply polarized the nation has become, with backers of rival Islamists and former regime figures each vowing they cannot let the other rule.

The impact of their rivalry goes beyond the key question of who gets to rule Egypt for the next four years.

An Islamist president will mean a more religious government, while many fear a figure from Hosni Mubarak's ousted regime occupying the land's highest office would keep Egypt locked in dictatorship and thwart democracy.

The two candidates that inspire the most polarized opinions are Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, the country's largest political group, and Ahmed Shafiq, a former air force commander and Mubarak's last prime minister, who was booted out of office by street protests several weeks after his former boss.

In the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, the mother of a young businessman who was beaten to death by policemen in 2010 warned of a "second revolution" if one of the "feloul" ? a member of the Mubarak regime, like Shafiq ? is elected. The killing of her son, Khaled Said, helped ignite the uprising against Mubarak last year.

"I don't feel that my son has received justice," Said's mother, Laila Marzouk, said Thursday after she voted for Hamdeen Sabahi, a leftist candidate who is a favorite among revolutionaries. "If one of the feloul of Mubarak's regime wins, another revolution will start and I'll be among the first to take part."

Beside Shafiq, the only other Mubarak regime figure running is Amr Moussa, who served as foreign minister for 10 years before he became the Arab League chief in 2001.

Resentment of the old regime and its symbols runs deep in some of Cairo's poor neighborhoods.

In the Dar el-Salam district, piles of festering trash sit outside polling centers and residents complain that their life has taken a turn for the worse after last year's uprising because some of the basic services, like trash collection and traffic policing, have disappeared ? some suspect deliberately.

"The municipality is not functioning, trash collectors are not working and there are no traffic policemen out on the streets," said Ahmed Abdo, a 51-year old minibus driver.

"The old regime is still here and is fighting back ... they want us to regret that we revolted."

His friend Ismail Eid, 43, agreed. "So long as the new president is backed by the poor, we will be his protectors. We will crush whoever tries to get in his way."

Both Shafiq and Morsi have repeatedly spoken of the dangers, real or imaginary, of the other becoming president. Morsi has said there would be massive street protests if a "feloul" wins the vote. They can only win if an election is rigged, he warned.

Shafiq, on his part, has said it would be "unacceptable" if an Islamist takes the presidential office, echoing the rhetoric of Mubarak, his longtime mentor who devoted much of his 29-year rule to fighting Islamists. Still, Shafiq's campaign has said it would accept the election's result.

While a Shafiq victory could spark protests, the deeper problem is whether Egypt's multiple power centers will be able to work together no matter who wins. Egyptians are eager for the new leader to rebuild the nation, wracked by more than a year of unrest, crime and a faltering economy.

A major issue is how a president will get along with the Islamist-dominated parliament, where the Brotherhood alone holds nearly half the seats and ultraconservatives known as Salafist have another 20 percent.

Also looming is the writing of a new constitution, already the source of contention. The Brotherhood and Islamists tried to control the panel tasked with writing the charter, sparking a backlash that led to the dissolving of the panel by a court ruling.

There is also the question of the powers that should be retained by the military after a president is elected. Many are concerned that the generals who took power after Mubarak's fall on Feb. 11, 2011, will try to retain influence.

The two days of voting, which end Thursday, are not expected to produce an outright winner among the 13 candidates vying for the post. If no one gets at least 50 percent of the vote, the top two finishers will go to a runoff June 16-17. The winner will be announced June 21.

To enourage a bigger turnout, the government has given the day off to workers and extended voting by one hour. Polls will now close at 9 p.m.

The generals who took control after Mubarak was ousted have promised to hand over power by July 1, repeatedly assuring critics that they have no wish to remain in charge. There are fears, however, that they could retain significant powers on matters of national security and key foreign policies.

"I like the personality of Shafiq. He is strong enough to lift the country," said Suheir Abdel-Moamen, one of several women standing in line waiting to vote in the middle class Cairo district of el-Zawiya al-Hamra. Somaiya Imam, still undecided on who to vote for, replied with a reference to Islamist candidates, saying: "Don't you think we should vote for the candidate who holds the Quran?"

"We voted for them before and they let us down," Abdel-Moneim responded, referring to the Brotherhood's victories in last year's parliamentary elections. "They want everything ? the presidency, parliament and government. They are never satisfied."

A woman standing behind the two chipped in: "But he (Shafiq) is a Mubarak's associate."

Sabahi, who adopts the socialist ideas of Egypt's late leader Gamal Abdel-Nasser, has been the choice of many who neither want an Islamist or a Mubarak-era figure for president. Others have turned to Abdel-Moneim Abolfotoh, who is an Islamist but is seen by some liberals as moderate enough.

In Cairo's northern Matariya district, a young IT specialist who asked not to be identified said she decided to vote for Sabahi as the middle-ground candidate.

"I wanted to vote for Ahmed Shafiq, because I am convinced he is the right man for the moment, but because I am afraid of what Islamists might do, I changed my mind and voted for Sabahi," she said. "Islamists either Salafis or Brotherhood are dying to hijack power. I am not going to give my vote for them."

Shafiq has been openly disparaging of the pro-democracy youth groups who led the 18-day uprising that forced Mubarak out of office 15 months ago. Critics accuse him of being too cozy with the generals who took over from Mubarak and whose own reputation is tainted by human rights abuses and authoritarian tendencies.

But with his strongman image, he has appealed to Egyptians who crave stability and fear Islamists.

Shafiq was met by several dozen protesters screaming "down with the feloul" as he arrived to vote in an upscale neighborhood east of Cairo on Wednesday afternoon. Some protesters showed their contempt by holding up their shoes in his direction. On his way out, some mobbed him, swinging their shoes at him as his security hustled him into his car.

Following the Ice: In the Beginning

The river crossing in May last year before the annual melt made it unpassable.

The river crossing in May last year before the annual melt made it unpassable.

Over the past few months I lost sleep almost every night thinking about Greenland. Polar bears and river crossings were always at the edge of my mind while lying in bed in Massachusetts. These thoughts sometimes kept me up till dawn. But the first night in my tent, I fell asleep instantly and slept well.

The morning I left, I loaded my car and took my dog on one last walk. When we got back she laid down next to the car and wouldn?t move, anxious about the large amount of gear in the car. The two of us set off for the airport?she took a flight to Minnesota where she?ll spend the summer with my parents and I left for Greenland.

After a night in Copenhagen and an amazing flight to Greenland (I was glued to the window watching the Greenland Ice Sheet), we landed in West Greenland in the town of Kangerlussuaq. While other towns in Greenland are composed of picturesque colorful houses clinging to the sides of fjords, Kangerlussuaq is more like an old army base. The town is, in fact, a former U.S. Air Force base, and life seems to revolve around the airport. That being said the town is exceptionally friendly, there are some good tourist shops, and if you like eating musk ox, this is the place for you. The animals are hunted and butchered locally and served at every restaurant. You can get musk ox burgers, musk ox pizza, and musk ox curry?my standard breakfast, lunch and dinner in town. It?s the kind of place where drivers wave at each other on the few roads, and it?s not uncommon to find employees at shops playing a game or goofing off when there are no customers.

At the airport I met my team, a scrappy group of young British graduate students and researchers. Everyone was carrying huge backpacks and wearing down jackets. All of us were excited to finally be at the start of the field season. Nice weather greeted us, the sun was shining, it wasn?t too cold, and the wind wasn?t blowing. After a compulsory musk ox burger at the airport, we began our many errands in hopes of heading to camp that day. We asked our contact at the Kangerlussuaq Science Support Center whether it?d been an especially warm spring and he looked at us slightly annoyed and said, no it?d been very cold, like usual. That afternoon as if to prove his point, it snowed for hours.

Our camp is about 15 miles as the crow flies from Kangerlussuaq. To get there we drive down a dirt road for about an hour and then turn onto a smaller road that ends at a river. Just before our turn-off we pass an old plane crash that?s spread over either side of the road. We?re told the plane crashed years ago when a fighter pilot couldn?t land because of bad weather, but that he ejected safely. At the end of the road is a river, and if it weren?t for this river, our camp would be much less isolated. As the melt season progresses, the river will swell with glacial meltwater and the ferry we?ve built?which consists of a small dingy, a static climbing rope and some pulleys?could become unusable. Last summer, icebergs the size of compact cars and a set of rapids kept us from crossing for over a month during peak melt. When we ran out of fuel for our generator and food for us, someone in town came out to our crossing, and using a rope we?d strung out above the river, transferred some essentials. If this happens again this summer, we?ll become even more dependent on our satellite phones and our wits.

After the river crossing, camp is an hour hike, over a riverbed and then up a long, steep hill covered in sand dunes. It?s never an easy hike and we typically have too much gear on our backs. Helicopters in Greenland are expensive and can be very hard to schedule, so much of our equipment, food and fuel, is hiked in.

Camp in May 2011

Camp in May 2011

Having spent almost four months living in our camp last year, I took my time hiking in this year. Very little had changed. I passed the caribou antlers I?d placed on a boulder, the musk ox mummy that marks the start of the hill climb, and looking across the valley I saw the large white rock I routinely mistook for a polar bear (which I did again this year). It felt like I?d never left and in fact I?ve only been gone nine months. I set my ?science tent? up in the exact same place and used the same rocks to secure it from the wind.

My science tent (which is currently keeping me sheltered from some freezing rain) is a hefty green dome tent where I live and work. I?ve tried to make it as comfortable as possible. My feeling is that the more comfortable my living situation is the more I?ll want to stay and work. To that end, I?ve hiked in a small worktable, a chair, and best of all, a little cot to sleep on. The tent?s dark green color even helps dim the arctic summer night. After a windstorm, dust and sand covers everything so I keep a small broom for sweeping (no shoes inside!). For electricity I?ve hiked in several car batteries that can be charged on solar panels or during the few hours a day we run the generator.

Like last season, I?ve taken my running shoes and clothes. Running over musk ox trails on the tundra next to the Greenland Ice Sheet is a memorable experience. The ground is soft, the peaks steep, and the views are spectacular. I usually run to the top of a small peak that overlooks the Greenland Ice Sheet where I?ve started a pile of rocks (one for each run). At the top, I stretch, shadow box and soak up the surroundings. It?s a much-needed respite from camp, a chance to be alone, and it makes me appreciate the immensity of the place. Back in camp after a run there are a few minutes I?m warm enough to take an ice-cold bucket shower. After about a week without a shower, I think most people start to miss being clean (and want to go home), so I suck it up, hold my breath, and convince myself to pour the burning cold water on my head.

Last year, the month of May was marked by frequent visits by very curious arctic foxes. We named an especially friendly one Foxy Prince (see previous post) and his ?girlfriend,? Foxy Princes. At one point Foxy Prince sauntered into our mess tent in the middle of dinner. When there is no one else for miles around it?s very unnerving to see someone else wander in. He looked at us as if surprised we weren?t expecting him, and then bolted back out the door. My favorite memory of Foxy Prince is the time he took a nap a few feet from me while I was playing guitar. My own dog hates my guitar playing and though she?ll lie down next to me, she whines incessantly (I swear I?m not that bad!). During the early part of last season Foxy Prince came by my tent every morning and woke me up. I think he?d figured out the location of the largest secret candy stash in camp.

I?ve yet to see any foxes yet, though we?ve heard their laughing bark and seen their tracks. It seems they?ve been replaced in camp by ravens?one woke me up this morning. He called a few times and then landed on top of my tent where he said something else, his odd call sounding like pebbles being dropped into a still pond. Ravens have managed to carry away tins of food and have even opened them up.

Also missing so far are musk ox?I?ve yet to see or smell any (sometimes you can smell them before you see them). Last year, hardly a day went by without seeing ?our herd? or ?Harold.? Harold being a satellite bull I often saw, usually while out on runs. Animal populations in the Arctic typically go through boom and bust cycles, so perhaps the past winter was a rough one or the heard has moved. I?d been looking forward to seeing Foxy Prince and the other animals again, in a way like seeing old friends, so I?m bit sad they?re not around yet.

Glaciers 101

A typical large load coming to camp last year and the way we typically brought it in.

A typical large load coming to camp last year and the way we typically brought it in.

In view from our camp and an hour hike away, is Leverett Glacier, a mid-sized, land-terminated glacier that spills off the Greenland Ice Sheet. Through there are other more accessible glaciers in Greenland (Russell Glacier for example), through years of work, we?ve learned that Leverett has a massive and definable catchment area, a single meltwater discharge point, and because it is moderately accessible in a fairly inaccessible country, we?ve chosen to study it extensively.

How glaciers melt and move is complex. Forced downhill by gravity, glaciers compress, deform, and slide while moving and crushing the rocks beneath them. Lakes of meltwater form on the ice surface and when the weight of the water becomes too great, the ice splits open, and can drain them in a matter of hours. During the early season before efficient meltwater channels develop under the ice, meltwater at the bottom of glaciers can physically lift the entire mass of ice and move it downhill. As this basal water (water at the glacier?s base) rushes beneath a glacier, it slowly breaks down and dissolves rocks and even supports a diverse community of microbial life that lives beneath the ice.

My work will focus on the chemistry of meltwater discharging from Leverett Glacier and my goal is to determine where the meltwater comes from and where it?s been. Some of the questions I?m interested in are:

??????? How long has the meltwater spent under the ice sheet?

??????? What percentage of the meltwater is derived from ice melted at the glacier?s base, how much is melted surface ice, and how much is snowmelt?

??????? Does friction cause more ice to melt at the glacier?s base when the glacier is accelerating?

??????? Do the types of subglacial meltwater flowpaths have an effect on the physical acceleration of glaciers?

??????? Will a warmer climate cause these glaciers to slide faster or slower?

??????? What are the weathering rates of the rocks beneath the glacier and can I estimate the amount of CO2 consumption via rock weathering occurring under the glacier?

??????? And finally, are subglacial environments conducive to methylating mercury, and if so is glacial meltwater is a source for methylmercury in the Arctic marine food web?

To answer these questions, I?m taking samples of the glacial meltwater river next to our camp at all hours of the day and night. The team is also taking many kinds of samples and each type is collected in a bottle specifically prepared for a particular analysis. We?ve also deployed a hefty arsenal of detectors, probes, and instruments into the river to monitor things like pH and electrical conductivity 24 hours a day. Extremely accurate GPS stations have been installed across the glacier and the Greenland Ice Sheet to monitor when and how Leverett Glacier moves. Data from the GPS stations will be compared with our chemical and physical observations at the river discharging from beneath the glacier. Hopefully we can synthesize all of this data and through lots of collaboration, put it all together.

Stay tuned for the next update! We?re only 10 days into the season and I?ve got over 70 more to go!

Life Is Not A Fiction & Can One Person Make A Difference - TypePad

Life Is Not A Fiction

?? ~ by OneMoreOption

Art is often a fiction.? Art often is pleasantly fictional.

When a fictional story more accurately approximates the moral complexities and ambiguities of real life, the fictional story often loses its broader appeal.? Life is often not poetic.? The ?endings? in real life often don?t wrap around and conclude at?a point of desired expectation.

I was watching the (free Netflix streamable) 2010?film ?London Boulevard? starring Colin Farrell and Keira Knightley.? What?? You?ve never heard of the?film ?London Boulevard? starring?the well known celebrities?Colin Farrell and Keira Knightley?? Even though it came out in 2010?? I submit the movie as evidence that more?realistic fictional tales often don?t garner broad appeal.? As a fictional story, a ?problem? with London Boulevard (and there were many problems with the structure and rhythm of the screenplay) was the characters were stereotypically drawn, but the consequences of their actions were too realistic.? The storytellers tried to have it both ways.? The end result was a dissatisfying gangster tale?where the??noble gangster? is ultimately undone because he lacks ruthlessness ? a?quality he tries consistently to resist and?oppose.? As a morality tale, the story works.? But the story is not a satisfying fiction for most filmgoers, because the ?good guy? loses ? a realistic result.

Today, I read?a short story in Issue #40 of the McSweeney?s Quarterly titled ?The Sisters?, written by Kevin Moffett.? It was a great piece of creative writing.? So many sentences and phrases were written with the intent and care to try to say things differently than one would expect.? The story is like a dream, a modern fairy tale about twin sisters whose lives may or may not regularly be taken over by external forces.? Alternatively, the external forces may simply be a product of their imagination.? Some fiction is written to reveal and speak to universal, truthful, and real concepts.? Other fiction is more intent on exploring dreams, creativity, and imaginary adventures.? I honestly don?t know where ?The Sisters? lies?on that scale ? and I mean that as a compliment.? It is a professional piece of writing on the topics of sexuality and love in the arts.

One of the potential problems with reading lots of fiction is that as a result the reader becomes very educated about fictions.? Fictional stories often don?t remotely simulate real life, real limitations, and real complexities.? I sometimes think some people who love fictional stories also love to wrap their minds up in fictions.? But one story is not necessarily as true as the next, and if you create your precepts and understandings about human relations largely from fictional narratives (including religious ones), you may end up jumping on horses you will have no ability to ride.? Some people, after being bucked off a few real horses, prefer to submerge their thoughts?and mind back into fictions, rather than attempting to do the incredibly difficult work of preparing and learning how to ride real horses.? For them, the concept of ?getting back on the horse? practically no longer becomes an option.? Instead, it?s easier to venture once more into the fictions.

Can One Person Make A Difference?

?? ~ by OneMoreOption

I?ve seen individuals who have made a great deal of positive difference in my life.? One person can make a difference.

And to anyone who honestly thinks one person cannot make a difference, I think it is a noble pursuit to attempt to live life, trying to prove one person can make a difference.

?Message In A Bottle? by The Police came on the radio this week, and this concept washed over me: What would my life be in the absence of only that one song?? Can I imagine my life and its shape without that song?? It?s just one song, written by one person.

It?s okay to engage yourself in a lifetime?s argument, trying to prove you, as only one person, can make positive differences in others? lives.? No matter how much others disagree with you, you can still spend the rest of your life trying to prove them wrong.

As a teen, in choirs, I was known for smiling, swaying, and being more animated with the lyrics and music than most of my choral mates.? Sticking out is not necessarily ideal in a choir ? it?s not the point.

In college, I?d work harder than average to try to make our variety shows funny and entertaining.

Now, some people might look at my actions and think:? That person loves attention.? They must be a narcissist.

I like attention fine.? I like to present myself well.? But it?s so much more than that.

My larger intent is to be a part of a world where people are animated, artistic, energetic, and vibrant.? And I can?t make other people be those things.? I can only make myself into an instrument toward those ends.? And so if no one else is dancing to the beat, I think someone should ? so sometimes that?s me.

It?s not about ?look at me.?? It?s about being an example of?what humans can be.

I said to my son, as we were practicing for his tennis competition:? ?It?s not about winning or losing.? The reasons you compete include:? 1) to show respect for your opponents and the game, 2) to do your best, 3) to get exercise, and 4) to put on a show, to be entertaining to yourself, your opponents and anyone watching.? Why not?? Why not try so hard that you become evidence of the human spirit?s desire to please and to be excellent?

As I was driving home from the airport today, I got a little emotional because I?m so grateful to this forum and to the readers and visitors.? It?s not primarily?about me.? If I wanted more attention, I?d write under my own name.? But that?s not my higher priority.? I love this forum because it allows me to put on a show ? to be an example of just one more person trying to make this life something more than the sum of the parts ? a spark, a catalyst, a spectacle.? I want the world to have ?Sexuality and Love in the Arts? and one more lightning rod point from which those parts of life can connect, interact, re-energize, and reflect back out again and again.

- -

For regular readers and writers:? Thank you for the new (and longtime) Facebook and email subscribers.? I?m heading to London, Venice, Florence, Rome, and Paris to see some artworks by people who chose to leave some enduring, emotional, corporeal,?and conceptual remarks for the rest of history to consider.

One reason to put your best foot forward and to put on shows while you can is:? you never know when your show will end.? As I?ve said before, part the reason I write directly is because when I write, I write knowing each post may be ?the last thing I wrote.?

Don?t just walk through life.? When you feel the urge, put on a show . . . like Mick Jagger.? You cannot understand Mick Jagger by looking at his static physical features.? You can only better understand him by observing his motions and expressions.

FDA panel votes against new use for J&J's Xarelto

(AP) ? A majority of Food and Drug Administration panelists voted against a new use for Johnson & Johnson's blood thinner Xarelto to reduce life-threatening blood clots.

The FDA's panel of experts voted 6-4 Wednesday against the new use for the pill, saying too much information was missing from company studies to accurately gauge the drug's benefit. One panel member abstained.

The FDA is not required to follow the group's advice, though it often does. A final decision is expected by June 29.

J&J already markets the pill for two patient groups: those with irregular heartbeat and those undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery.

The New Brunswick, N.J.-based company is now asking the FDA to approve it as a preventive measure against life-threatening blood clots in patients with acute coronary artery disease. That's a condition in which a narrowed blood vessel reduces flow to the heart muscle, increasing the risk of heart attack and other catastrophic problems.

The FDA's lead reviewer for the drug recommended approving the indication, based on a 15,500-patient J&J study showing Xarelto significantly reduced a combination of fatal heart problems, stroke and heart attack.

Panelists said the trial appeared successful, but they worried that the large number of patients who dropped out may have exaggerated the drug's effect. More than 2,400 patients, or 15.5 percent of the total study population, dropped out before completion. J&J argued that this drop-out rate is not unusual for a large, long-term drug study.

Panelists also worried about bleeding side effects linked to the pill. Patients taking Xarelto were three times more likely to have major internal bleeding, compared with patients taking traditional blood thinners like aspirin and Plavix. Xarelto would be used as an add-on drug, in addition to those older blood thinners. Panelists said they were skeptical about creating a new standard where patients would take three drugs to prevent blood clots.

Xarelto is part of a new group of blood thinners intended to supplant the longtime standard treatment, warfarin, which is cheap but requires frequent blood tests to get dosing right and can interact with numerous foods and other medicines. J&J markets Xarelto in the U.S., and Bayer HealthCare sells it in other regions. It was first approved in July.

Other new blood thinners include Pradaxa from Boehringer Ingelheim, which was approved in October 2010.

J&J shares fell 25 cents to close at $63.27.

US missiles 'kill four in Pakistan'

US missiles killed four militants in a Taliban stronghold of Pakistan on Wednesday, officials said, amid increasing strains with the West over a six-month blockade on NATO supplies into Afghanistan.

A drone targeted a compound near Miranshah, the main town of the tribal district where Pakistan has resisted US pressure to launch a sweeping offensive against militants fighting US troops in neighbouring Afghanistan.

"The drone fired two missiles on a house in the Tabai area near Miranshah," one of the security officials told AFP on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media, adding that four militants were killed.

"It is not immediately known if an important target is among those killed," he said.

The area is a stronghold of the Haqqani network -- Afghan insurgents blamed for a series of spectacular attacks on Western targets in Kabul -- and Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud.

Islamabad denies any support for Haqqani activities, but the former chief US military officer, Admiral Mike Mullen, called them a "veritable arm" of the Pakistan Inter-Services Intelligence agency.

US officials say its leaders are based in Waziristan, the most notorious militant stronghold in Pakistan's semi-autonomous northwestern tribal belt.

Washington considers the area the main hub of Taliban and Al-Qaeda plotting attacks on the West and in Afghanistan. US officials have accused Pakistani intelligence agents of playing a double game in supporting or at least turning a blind eye to Afghan insurgents.

A local administration official and another intelligence official confirmed Wednesday's drone strike and casualties.

Residents said the bodies had been charred badly and militants had cordoned off the area and were sifting through the rubble.

It was the third US drone strike reported in Pakistan since parliament in March demanded an end to the attacks on Pakistani territory, as part of new guidelines for Islamabad's often stormy relationship with Washington.

Relations plummeted into deep crisis after US air strikes killed 24 Pakistani soldiers on November 26, prompting Islamabad to shut its Afghan border to NATO supplies and evict US personnel from an airbase reportedly used as a hub for drones.

Pakistan says the missile attacks are counter productive, violate its sovereignty, kill civilians and fuel anti-US sentiment.

The frequency of the drone strikes has diminished since November, but US officials are believed to consider them too useful to stop altogether.

They have argued that drone strikes are a valuable weapon in the war against Al-Qaeda and other Islamist militants.

Pakistan signalled last week that it was prepared to end the NATO blockade, but hopes of clinching a deal appeared to break down over the cost of transit rights.

US President Barack Obama snubbed Pakistan at this week's NATO summit in Chicago, only seeing President Asif Ali Zardari in passing and voicing frustration with Pakistan.

Islamabad has been incensed by Washington's refusal to apologise for the November air strikes and US officials have so far rejected Pakistani proposals to charge several thousand dollars for each alliance truck crossing the border.

The blockade has forced NATO to rely on longer, more expensive routes through Russia and Central Asia, even as it plans a large-scale withdrawal of combat troops and hardware from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

According to an AFP tally, 45 US missile strikes were reported in Pakistan's tribal belt in 2009, the year Obama took office, 101 in 2010 and 64 in 2011.

The New America Foundation think-tank in Washington says drone strikes have killed between 1,715 and 2,680 people in Pakistan in the past eight years.

The author of the new book "Playborhood" describes in great detail his philosophy and the elbow-grease steps he undertook to create a life for his kids, and those who live in proximity, that more closely mirrors the kind of playful, neighborhood-based childhood kids had 30 to 40 years ago than the ?sedentary, living-room-based one that many have today.

Lanza accomplishes this with great humor and plenty of vivid examples of people reclaiming their community spaces for play and gathering, from inner city Bronx, to an apartment-complex courtyard in California, to a formerly faceless intersection in Portland, Oregon.

As such, his can-do spirit is not only infectious, but is backed up with specific how-to's: informing a reader how to turn a driveway into a giant game board, for example, or a yard into a nature or other playscape where kids will want to come play.

A self-proclaimed neighborhood play evangelist, Lanza and his wife and three sons are walking the walk (and playing the play), and clearly influencing others to come along and have fun.

"Playborhood" also explores the larger issues of what makes a community work, from home and neighborhood design (think front porches and calm streets, for starters) to human behavior. Lanza believes in block parties and community dinners, and in giving kids a little room to roam.

Lanza has created a terrific and heartfelt blueprint that should result in safer neighborhoods, more joyous and cohesive families and communities and, ultimately, more kids getting out to play.

Why China Stuck Its Foot in Android's Door

China's antitrust authorities have approved Google's purchase of Motorola Mobility, on the condition that the Android operating system remains open source and its code is made freely available to original equipment manufacturers. Android devices had nearly 74 percent of the Chinese market in Q4, 2011, and that means Android is in a dominant position, China's Commerce Department said.

Malcolm Harris: Women in Wine: The Three Graces

2012-05-22-threegraces.jpgJoy Sterling, Laura Maniec, and Keiko Niccolini: The Three Graces

Recently I decided to conquer a great fear in my very storied and bizarre life -- the dreaded Wine List. As a fashion designer, writer, and man about town I'm very fortunate to be invited to fancy and swanky restaurants, soirees and events. Therefore to put it plainly, I spend a fair amount of time inhaling great food and swigging fine wine. I know - don't cry for me Argentina. However, not until recently did I truly realize I wasn't fully appreciating the art, process and tradition of fine dining and particularly, the crafstmanship of great wine. But all of this about to change -- and when Mister GoLightly decides to make a change, he brings everyone along for the ride.

The first thing I knew I would need to begin my transformation from vino novice to wine connoisseur was a team of experts. Yes experts, as I plan on taking my wine consumption very seriously from this point forward. Therefore I will require a trio of professionals to guide me in the right direction. So I decided to seek assistance from the people closest to me. I telephoned, emailed, and met with almost every person I knew that had anything to do with the wine business. However, what I found a little strange was that most of the people I knew in the wine biz were all men. While most of the men I spoke with were all very passionate and educated about wine, there was just something about their approach that didn't quite fit with what I was trying to get at in my quest. I really wanted to know more about the sense of reverence that seems to surround the art of wine tasting and making. In essence, I really wanted to be educated on the beauty, charm and creativity of fine wine. Somehow, this got me to wondering, "Are there many women in the wine business?" I didn't have very long to ponder the question as it was magically answered one fateful afternoon while having lunch at the Four Seasons in New York City. I started yammering on and on about my need to connect to people in the wine business when a dear friend said to me, "You should meet one of the owner's daughter, Keiko. She knows all about wine."

2012-05-22-keikofourseasons.jpgKeiko Niccolini / Four Seasons Restaurant

BEAUTY: The strikingly gorgeous and modelesque Keiko Niccolini was born into the charmed world of restaurants and fine dining -- the venerable Four Seasons Restaurant to be exact. Legend has it that Keiko could filet a Dover sole and saber a bottle of champagne before she could ride a bike. As a young girl she could be found on any given day running through the hallowed halls of the family business. However, as an adult she now travels the world in search of new dishes and wines to bring to the tables of the Four Season as well as her wine consulting firm AMEDEO. Keiko as you can imagine, was destined for a life in food and wine.

And now, Keiko Niccolini has agreed to be my guru, my personal guide as I embark on a mysterious journey into and beyond Wine Tasting 101.

Under Ms. Niccolini's tutelage and through the course of our adventures, I am hoping to come out on the other end a lot more knowledgeable and a little less afraid of sampling and experiencing new wines and spirits. It is also my desire to finally retire my catch phrase when it comes to choosing or drinking wine, "It doesn't matter what I drink -- I only drink to get drunk." Which is only partly true. Who cares if every time I repeat it Keiko reacts as if someone has taken their well manicured fingernails and scratched them down a freshly wiped chalkboard. Well I care -- and hopefully somewhere along the way, this juvenile retort will be retired and replaced with language that describes delicious wine with the respect and grace it rightfully deserves.

Needless to say, Keiko and I have become fast friends. Recently after attending a not-so-fabulous and actually quite boring soiree, she thought that it would be the perfect time for a surprise crash course in wine tasting -- total emergence in wine culture. So she decided to introduce me to a real-life Master Sommelier, Ms. Laura Maniec.

CHARM: Laura Maniec is a Native New Yorker and the charismatic owner of Corkbuzz Wine Studio. During the course of our evening I learned that Laura actually discovered her true enthusiasm for wine through an 18-week sommelier certification class at Windows of the World. It was through this experience that she was inspired, motivated and excited to pursue a career in wine.

A girl after my own heart, just as Laura was legally able to drink she became a sommelier at Blue Fin in New York City. Progressing quickly, she was made a partner as well as wine and spirits director for the entire B.R. Guest Restaurant Group of 20 restaurants across the country. At only 25 years old, she was managing the wine list as well as educating the entire front-of-house team on wine.

It turns out the charming and personable Ms. Maniec earned her Master Sommelier designation in 2009 and is currently the youngest in the world. Not to mention she is one of only 18 women to have achieved this highest accreditation given to wine professionals. And on this night she too agreed to join the team and proceeded to give me a VIP guided tour through their intense and intimidating wine list. But for the first time in being presented a normally daunting wine list, I wasn't afraid. I was almost downright giddy. What did I have to fear? I was now armed with not only a wine guru but also a master sommelier. Take that 33- or 72-page wine list! Okay, in all honesty, I may be exaggerating the personal attention given just to me by our master sommelier. You see Laura seems to possess the uncanny ability to give everyone that enters the doors of CorkBuzz the same level of attention and graciousness -- an ability rarely found in New York City eateries these days.

To attempt description of the champagnes, reds, whites and ros?s that danced and dazzled in my mouth on this evening would do CorkBuzz and Ms. Maniec a grave injustice. I don't possess the eloquence to characterize the pas de deux that took place between the exquisite wine list and the culinary masterpieces prepared by their Executive Chef, Hayan Yi. I don't dare attempt to formulate adequate prose to depict the near religious experience that visitors share in this tastefully decorated restaurant and wine bar. To try and fail would be borderline blasphemy. However after almost closing down the joint accompanied by a magnificent high that had no resemblance at all to being drunk, I felt as if I had to rush home and immediately repent, "Our Mother, Full of Grace..."

Which brings me to the most recent introduction to form my dream team, my trilogy, my Three Graces...

For several weeks during our tastings and outings, Keiko kept saying to me, "You have to meet my mentor in all things wine. You will love her." I will admit, in my experience whenever someone says to me "You will love him or her," this has rarely ever been the case. But this was coming from my guru -- my liege, and she hadn't steered me wrong thus far. So off I went the other afternoon, in the pouring New York City rain, to The Modern restaurant located at the Museum of Modern Art to meet Ms. Joy Sterling.

CREATIVITY: The inventive and visionary Joy Sterling represents the second generation of wine making at Iron Horse Vineyards. She is the CEO of the winery and the author of four books on the art of wine. Although she was born in America, Joy grew up in Paris, attended a French school, and speaks fluent French. Living in Europe and traveling extensively, Ms. Sterling received an extraordinary education in the appreciation of food and wine as well as a love of quality wherever it is found in the world.

Joy returned to the United States to attend Yale University where she studied history and economics. After her studies she went into journalism, first for United Press International, followed by local television, and ultimately, network TV news. At the age of 29, Joy was Deputy Bureau Chief for ABC Network News in Los Angeles. She was given numerous special assignments including coverage of the first Space Shuttle landings in California, coordinating producer for several Presidential trips, and the high point of her career, Assignment Editor for ABC's 1984 Olympic coverage.

In 1985, Joy left ABC's hierarchy to join her family's business. Thus, a new sort of woman was recruited into California's wine industry. Significantly, she made news headlines for the winery with her first achievement at Iron Horse. In November, 1985, the White House selected Iron Horse Sparkling Wine for the President's toast to peace at the first summit meeting with Mikhail Gorbachev in Geneva.

Joy quietly took up the reins at Iron Horse at the start of 2006, having spent 20 years traveling on behalf of the winery, personally introducing the wines to an impressive list of customers from Spago in Beverly Hills to the Four Seasons in New York.

She is an adventurer, having climbed Kilimanjaro, run white water rapids on the Bio-Bio River in Chile and the upper reaches of the Yank Sing River in China, trekked in Tibet and Bhutan, and completed a road trip to Timbuktu.

Joy joined the prestigious Board of Trustees of The Leakey Foundation in 2007. One of her major initiatives is hosting an annual fundraising and awareness raising event in partnership with National Geographic celebrating Earth Day held at Iron Horse.

Now I ask you -- What is there not to love about Joy a.k.a. @JoyBubbles? From the moment we made eye contact as I shuffled in from the pouring rain, looking more disheveled like Ms. GoLightly's wet cat than the intended flawlessness of Holly off to visit Sally Tomato at Sing-Sing, I innately knew that I would be captivated and bewitched by the accomplished Joy Sterling.

Joy is earth-mother, rainmaker and wine whisperer wrapped into one stylish, hot-mama of a package. Did I mention she was also wearing a navy vintage Dior dress? I almost died and went to heaven at the sight of this magnificent being. The one thing you quickly learn about Joy within five minutes of being in her presence is that she is filled with love, life and passion. As we shared a bottle of her world famous Iron Horse Wedding Cuvee I found out that she is also a hugger, a great thinker, a visionary, a powerhouse, and just an awesome down-to-earth gal.

During the entire afternoon my eyes kept darting from Keiko to Joy, my mind was racing, but my mouth couldn't keep up with all the thoughts bursting through my brain. I must have come across as a complete crazy person but what I couldn't explain to either of these incredible women was how I was finally beginning to understand it all. How I understood there was more than just wine they had in common. How I could see the ancestral sisterhood, the kinship, an indigo hued spiritual camaraderie void of competition or pettiness. But mostly, I was in complete and utter awe. I found myself in an absolute state of humbled gratitude. Grateful that I had been allowed to bare witness to their sublime and noble grace.

As I finally sat down to write this piece, I couldn't believe that in only a few short weeks I had already begun to develop a true appreciation for wines produced in Napa Valley as well as grapes grown in the Vittoria region of Sicily. I discovered that my preference for all things "pink and bubbly" had very little to do with my flamboyance and sexual orientation and much more to do with the various techniques and processes utilized to achieve just the right shade, smell and taste of Ros?. And while I am still at the very beginning stages of my wine adventures, I doubt very seriously if I will be drinking with the goal of getting drunk in mind (wink-wink). Instead, I envision buckling up and bracing myself for the long and meandering roads of wine country under the watchful gaze, generosity and guidance of my divine Three Graces.
