Egypt's beleaguered Christians worry about persecution, neglect under Morsi

The past 18 months have been particularly trying for Egypt's Christians, who have clashed with Muslims and lost a religious leader. Now they wonder what life will be like under an Islamist president.

The thick dust and cobwebs that have settled on the ruined house since last year don?t hide the signs of the fire and looting that took place during clashes between Muslims and Christians in this small village in the rural Nile valley.?As Ms. Fanous reaches a balcony on the third floor, overlooking another burned house, this one with a cross on the outside walls,?she begins to weep ? but not over the ruined house.

Police arrested and tried 20 people ? 12 Christians and eight Muslims ??for their involvement in the clashes,?during which Muslim crowds attacked and burned dozens of Christian homes and shops and Christians fired guns from their rooftops. One of the those arrested for the violence, which killed two people, was Fanous's brother.?

All Christians on trial, including her brother, were sentenced to life in prison, while all Muslim defendants were acquitted.?

To Fanous, it felt like another, unbearable, injustice added to the initial attack. ?All the attackers are free; they weren?t punished. But the people who tried to defend their homes are all in prison,? she says.

It has been a difficult 18 months for Egyptian Christians. During the period between former President Hosni Mubarak?s ouster and the election of a civilian president, in which Egypt was under military rule, there were at least 12 incidents of serious sectarian violence, often involving Christian homes or churches being attacked and burned. On New Year?s Eve, 2011, a bomb ripped through a church in Alexandria, killing nearly two dozen people.?In October, Army soldiers and unidentified civilians attacked a mostly Christian protest in Cairo, killing 27 people.?

Adding to their difficulties,?the pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church, the largest in Egypt, passed away earlier this year.

Then came the election of Mohamed Morsi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. Many Christians considered the election of an Islamist president the worst possible outcome of the vote. They fear?Morsi will make it harder to build new churches and practice their faith, despite his promises to treat Christians as equal citizens.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton voiced concerns about respect for religious freedom in a speech yesterday after the State Department released its annual International Religious Freedom Report for 2011. She said Egyptian authorities have failed to consistently prosecute those who commit sectarian violence, which sends a message that "there's not going to be any consequences." The report covered 2011, before Morsi took office.

?We are a little bit afraid of the future,? says Yunan Khalil, the priest of the Virgin Mary Catholic church in Abu Qurqas.??The Muslim Brotherhood is not clear. They say something, but do the other."

Morsi's history raises eyebrows

The difficulties are not new. For decades, Christians in Egypt have faced incredible obstacles getting government permission to build or renovate churches, while mosques are relatively easily constructed. Coptic history is virtually ignored in schools. There are few Christians in top government positions. Under Mubarak, the Coptic community increasingly withdrew from participating in political life, and it came to rely on the Coptic pope ? who then passed away ? as an intercessor with the government.

Verizon to stop blocking tethering apps, settles with FCC for $1.25 million

In May of last year, our free ride came to an end. US carriers started blocking third party tethering apps in the Android Market. Not long after, the built in feature was turned off on most phones. Our fortune may be reversing, however. The FCC has ruled that Verizon violated the rules governing the C Block of LTE spectrum by preventing consumers from using any application of their choice. The end result: Big Red will have to open up its airwaves and allow customers to circumvent its $20 a month tethering plan using apps from the Play store -- so long as you're on a "usage-based pricing plan." Though it's not explicitly stated, we assume that means those of you lucky enough to be grandfathered in to the unlimited data plans are left out. In addition to unblocking apps such as PdaNet and Barnacle, Verizon must pay a $1.25 million settlement to put an end to the investigation. Woman known as Sea Hag accused of fatally shooting man who refused to give her a beer

A Florida Keys woman known as Sea Hag has been charged with fatally shooting a man who refused to give her a beer.

Carolyn Dukeshire, 62, was arrested late Sunday, charged with first-degree murder.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Dukeshire shot 64-year-old Martin Mazur five times after Mazur denied her a beer.?Casey Whippo, who was with Mazur at the time of the shooting told police they had just returned from dinner to Mazur's house in Conch Key, were sitting outside and had just opened a beer. Dukeshire walked around the side of the house and asked if she could have one, the witness told investigators. When Mazur refused, he said, she opened fire, shooting him in the abdomen, twice in the back and once in the wrist.

After a struggle, she tossed the gun into a canal and sat down before police arrived. Mazur was rushed to Fisherman's Hospital in Marathon, Fla., where he later died.

According to KeysNews.com, Dukeshire, a fisherwoman, is being held without bond in the Monroe County Detention Center.

The annual Defcon hacking meetup produces its share of unique creations. You know you're in for something special when even your entrance badge is an adventure. Defcon 20 might be winding to a close, but about 650 guests may just have the fondest memory of all: access to a private, ad hoc GSM carrier from Ninja Networks. While the collective's Ninja Tel is really an invitation to a party at the Rio Hotel, where the lone cell site operates out of a van, it lets the privileged few call and text each other to their hearts' content over cellular and WiFi. The network operators can unsurprisingly eavesdrop on any of the completely unencrypted calls -- this is a hacker's convention, after all -- but we don't think guests mind after getting an equally rare, customized HTC One V for free to make the calls in question. The Android 4.0 phone gets unique perks like triggering a nearby vending machine with Qualcomm's AllJoyn or making apps on the spot through Google's Integrated Development Environment. Owners can even reflash the One V to hop on AT&T or T-Mobile afterwards. Just don't expect to see Ninja Tel popping up in your hometown anytime soon; when Defcon shuts its doors, the cellular network shuts down.

Syria rebels capture 150 troops in Aleppo, Idlib: NGO

Syrian rebels on Friday captured 150 regime troops and militia members in the northern city of Aleppo and the northwestern province of Idlib, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

It reported rebels as saying they had captured 100 regime soldiers and militia members in Aleppo and another 50 in Idlib, citing videos distributed by Syrian activists.

The video of dozens of men in civilian clothing seated in a courtyard in Aleppo was filmed by a man describing himself as a member of the rebel Free Syrian Army.

The captured men tell the camera that they are in the Syrian army and the "shabiha" pro-regime militia.

"I am Colonel Mohammed Rashid Mohammed al-Mhmeid... I was arrested at the entrance of Aleppo," one says.

"I am Captain Fuad al-Hosh, commander of the Aleppo police in Shaar district. I was captured when I left my post," says another.

One man identifies himself as a member of the shabiha, saying he was captured in Hanano in Aleppo and had "killed a demonstrator."

Both rebels and troops have been massing in Aleppo for a major battle, but fighting has already taken place, including in the southern district of Salaheddin.

The Observatory said the second video shows the aftermath of fighting in the town of Maaret al-Numan in Idlib.

"After clashes that lasted 12 hours, rebels destroyed a military security post and captured 50 regime troops, including 14 officers," Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP by phone.

Abdul Rahman said the fighters seized a large amount of weapons and ammunition from the military post near a checkpoint.

In the video posted on YouTube, rebels in civilian clothing are seen rummaging through what appears to be an old building used as government offices.

The person recording the footage walks through an arched hallway into an adjacent room, where a body with a severed arm lies on the floor.

One man tells the others: "Pee on him."

"No, he's already dead. Show some respect," another retorts.

Outside, the streets are littered with debris and teenage boys and men walk freely, toting Kalashnikov assault rifles.

"This is the largest street in Maaret al-Numan, which was controlled by the regime. It is now in the hands of the local rebels." the cameraman is heard to say.

People in Barraba, in the New England region of northern New South Wales, have demanded to know why they were never invited to sit on the taskforce implementing a remediation plan at the derelict Woodsreef Asbestos mine.

About 90 people packed the amphitheatre of The Playhouse Hotel last night in Barraba for a progress report on the Woodsreef mine, which was abandoned in 1983 and never cleaned up.

Taskforce chairman Brad Mullard told the gathering a Health Risk Assessment is imminent.

?(They will be) installing monitoring, looking at what is the air quality, whether there?s asbestos in the air and measuring that around the mine site as well as in the township,? he said.

The meeting also heard the closure of the road that passes through the mine is probably not negotiable.

Landholder Ben Burgess tabled a motion demanding the taskforce approach the government to include people from Barraba in decision-making.

?It?s about getting community representation and making sure there?s an evidence-based outcome for the local community to make sure that all facets of the risks, as well as the costs, to the Barraba community are taken into account,? he said.

?I think it would be unwise to reach a conclusion that people in the community have no expertise and nothing to offer.?

Meanwhile, leading public health physician told the briefing there is no safe level of exposure to chrysotile, or ?white?, asbestos.

Dr David Durrheim says anyone who believes white asbestos is safe should read the latest data coming out of the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

?When they categorise a cancer as a Category One it means there?s definitive evidence,? he said.

?It?s like smoking and lung cancer, that?s the sort of category. They?ve established that white asbestos exposure in the occupational setting causes lung cancer, mesothelioma, larynx cancer and ovarian cancer.?

It is estimated about 40,000 Australians will have some kind of asbestos-related disease by the year 2020.

Happy Friday!

I?ve spent the day sleeping + cleaning, hoping to jump-start my labor. Still nothing. I?ve watched 2-3 of my friends who were due AFTER me go into labor already + still, I sit here, waiting.

I can definitely say, without a doubt this is the only time in my life where I have experienced such agony around waiting for something.

Everything before this has been an effortless letting go + trusting.

But this, this is hard for me to let go of. My friends are getting a kick out of it because my true humanness is showing.

I suppose I?m so eager for our little one to make his voyage into the world because I am ready to begin my healing process. To get my body back + find my groove with the little one + my work life.?

Just writing that reminds me to savor this moment.

It?s very likely after he is here, I?ll wish I had these moments of nothingness back.

But anywho.?

Thank you to everyone who has been sending their love + support for me during this time. My Facebook + Twitter feed is filled with thoughts of joy for this time in my life + I am beyond grateful.

Part-time students in England can now apply for student loans ...

From today OU students in England new to part-time study can start to apply for a loan from Student Finance England.

This is the formal launch of the part-time student loan system through the release of the loan application form by Student Finance England. It comes after the Government announced last year that, as part of changes to the funding of higher education in England, it would extend student loans (tuition fee loans) to the part-time sector.

Will Swann, Director, Students, at the OU, said: ?Opening up tuition fee loans to part-time students gives even more flexibility to students to manage the costs of their studies.

?In the lead up to this day, we?ve been keeping our new students updated on what they need to do to prepare to apply for a loan. For most people, this will be the first time they?ve been through this process and we?ve produced a wide range of guidance to help them.?

Tuition fee loans mean students are able to study without paying anything upfront. Loans are available to people in England studying for their first undergraduate qualification (or one higher than any they already hold) and starting after September 2012.

'Not a barrier to study'
Students taking out a tuition fee loan will not have to make any repayments until four years after they start their studies, and will only make repayments if they?re earning more than ?21,000.

Will Swann added: ?We?ve also put in place the OU Guarantee for this year. Student loans have been part of full-time university study for years, but they are new to part-time students. We want to reassure students who might be worried that they won?t be approved for a student loan in time, that this doesn?t need to be a barrier to study.?

The OU Guarantee will enable students who are eligible for a student loan to start studying even if they haven?t received their student loan confirmation before their course starts.

In addition to loans offered by Student Finance England, the OU has a range of flexible payment options to support students when it comes to financing their studies.

Flexible ways to pay
The Access to Success Route provides help with the cost of study and enhanced levels of learner support via two simple steps. It has been designed to help those on low incomes and with no formal qualifications to take their first steps in higher education. The Access to Success Route is funded by the Government?s National Scholarship Scheme and the OU.

Students who are not eligible for a tuition fee loan, or choose not to apply for one, could pay their tuition fees in instalments through OUSBA, the OU?s flexible ?pay as you go? finance system. Through OUSBA, students can spread the costs of their module fees into instalments. There is also the option for students to pay their fees in full upfront, or approach their employers for sponsorship.

In response to the new funding regime the OU launched a new video which helps people navigate through the financial options available.

"The Amazing Race"

"The Amazing Race," CBS Status: Renewed Why: Voted the best reality show on TV several times (albeit years ago), "The Amazing Race" isn't going anywhere. Ratings have dropped a bit, but are still solid.

"The Big Bang Theory"

"The Big Bang Theory," CBS Status: Renewed Why: Nothing seems to be able to make a dent in this show. With fantastic ratings (it beat "Idol"!) and a rabid following, we'll be seeing plenty more "Big Bang" before its run is over.

"Blue Bloods," CBS Status: Renewed Why: The anchor of Friday nights on CBS, "Blue Bloods" has performed well, pulling in around 11 million viewers an episode. The show might not have the youngest audience, but it's still enough for CBS to keep it on the schedule.

"Criminal Minds," CBS Status: Renewed Why: Paget Brewster might be checking out, but "Criminal Minds" is here to stay. In Season 7, the procedural is still a consistently strong ratings performer for CBS.

"CSI," CBS Status: Renewed Why: Whenever the time comes, the "CSI" mothership will end with a lot of fanfare, but not this year. With new faces Ted Danson and Elisabeth Shue around, there is going to be at least one more season.

"So You Think You Can Dance," Fox Status: Too soon to tell Why: Season 9 of "So You Think You Can Dance" won't debut until this summer and when it does, there will be changes: Fox has nixed the results show entirely. If the fanbase is still there, the cheaper production could save the show for another few seasons.

"Fashion Star," NBC Status: Renewed Why: The high-style reality series with Nicole Richie, Jessica Simpson, Elle Macpherson and John Varvatos has certainly been confusing, but it's still a smart business model: The winning designs each week are for sale in stores the next day, and those stores just happen to be covering a large portion of production and advertising costs.

"Fear Factor," NBC Status: Likely to be renewed Why: Despite the donkey semen scandal that cut this season of "Fear Factor" a bit short, <a href="http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/12/13/fear-factor-returns-and-makes-a-ratings-splash/" target="_hplink">"Fear Factor" boosts NBC's ratings</a> ... and can a scandal really compete with that?

"Law & Order: SVU," NBC Status: Renewed Why: The only "Law & Order" left, "SVU" has been an NBC power player for 13 years and will return for a 14th.

"The Office"

"The Office," NBC Status: Renewed Why: It's hard to imagine a long-running, fan-favorite show like "The Office" going away without a big promotional push. The numbers are still good (by NBC standards) and "The Office" will return for a Season 9.

"Parenthood"

"Parenthood," NBC Status: Renewed Why: The perpetual bubble show has done pretty consistent numbers for NBC this season, but three seasons in and no signs of growth is both a good and bad sign ... luckily for fans, NBC gave it a Season 4 all the same.

"Parks and Recreation"

"Parks and Recreation," NBC Status: Renewed Why: Just like the rest of NBC's Thursday comedy block, "Parks and Recreation" has serious ratings blues. Can critical acclaim keep "Parks" around for a Season 5? The answer is yes! "Parks" will return for Season 5.

"The Playboy Club," NBC Status: Canceled Why: Apparently fictional slutty bunnies and real-life homewrecker Eddie Cibrian do not a successful show make. It only lasted three episodes. "The Girls Next Door" did it better.

"Prime Suspect," NBC Status: Canceled Why: Maria Bello's gruff detective failed to capture the audience NBC hoped. At least we had all those hat jokes.

"Smash"

"Smash," NBC Status: Renewed Why: After a huge promo blitz, "Smash" debuted nicely, but started losing viewers quickly. A handful of episodes in, it stabilized, becoming NBC's #1 drama in the 18-49 demo, and NBC announced it was getting a second season.

"Up All Night"

"Up All Night," NBC Status: Renewed Why: The critical favorite of NBC's new comedy offerings, "Up All Night" debuted strongly to more than 10 million viewers, but has since dropped to less than 4 million viewers an episode. It will return for a Season 2.

"Whitney"

"Whitney," NBC Status: Renewed Why: The show is one of the better performing freshman offerings on the Peacock network -- and NBC chief Bob Greenblatt told members of the press at TCA that he is "hopeful Whitney will be a long-term player for us." Looks like Season 2 is a good start, with the show moving to Friday nights.

"The Voice," NBC Status: Renewed Why: We may not even be at Season 2's live shows yet, but NBC is already up for more of "The Voice." Hopefully, Cee Lo's cat "Purrfect" will return for Season 3 as well.
