Wall Street falls, tests support ahead of Bernanke speech

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell on Thursday, following several sessions of muted trading, as investors closed out positions and looked ahead to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's speech to central bankers Friday for fresh trading incentives.

Bernanke is due to speak at a symposium of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where he is expected to stoke expectations for a third round of quantitative easing, though he may not detail the timing of the Fed's action.

All 10 S&P sectors were lower, with energy <.gspe> off 1.1 percent as the worst performing S&P sector. The index was once again testing the 1,400 mark, which has acted as a support level recently.

Over the past three weeks, the index has traded in a tight range between 1,400 and the April 2 high of 1,422.38, which has acted as a resistance point. The index has appreciated nearly 7 percent since the end of May.

"The market is somewhat extended but you could blow in the wrong direction and something is going to happen," said Stephen Massocca, managing director of Wedbush Morgan in San Francisco.

"It's hard to draw a lot of conclusions given how thin the markets are," he said.

Indeed, volume was anemic, with a combined 1.96 billion shares traded near the midpoint of the session on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Amex and Nasdaq, well below the average pace for this time in the session.

The daily trading volume, which has been at 2012 lows this week in a reflection of investors' reluctance to place big bets before Bernanke's speech, could weigh on profits at exchanges and brokers.

Fueling further caution among investors was the impending European Central Bank meeting on September 6 and a host of economic data scheduled for next week, including the Labor Department's payrolls report for August.

The S&P had barely budged over the prior three sessions - resulting in a decline of merely 0.05 percent - and hasn't closed with a 1 percent move in either direction since August 3.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> dropped 99.96 points, or 0.76 percent, to 13,007.52. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> lost 10.34 points, or 0.73 percent, to 1,400.15. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> fell 27.77 points, or 0.90 percent, to 3,053.42.

Nearly all retailers posted better-than-expected sales gains in August at stores open at least a year as parents and students wrapped up back-to-school purchases, setting the stage for a strong third quarter. Even with the surprising sales numbers, the Morgan Stanley retail index <.mvr> dipped 0.4 percent as it was weighed down by a drop in Sears Holdings Corp .

S&P Dow Jones Indices LLC said it will replace Sears with chemical maker LyondellBasell Industries NV in the S&P 500 after the close of trading on September 4. Sears dropped 7.4 percent to $53.18 while LyondellBasell gained 4.1 percent to $48.82.

Economic data showed consumer spending enjoyed its biggest rise in five months while the number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits held steady last week.

Pandora Media Inc

surged 18.9 percent to $11.99 a day after reporting adjusted second-quarter earnings that beat expectations and raising its full-year outlook.

Body parts found in auctioned Florida storage unit

By the CNN Wire Staff

updated 3:59 PM EDT, Thu August 30, 2012

The body parts were found after the storage unit was auctioned.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Police are trying to determine whether a crime was committed
  • The unit belonged to a former assiciate medical examiner
  • The contents were sold at auction last week
  • The body parts were stored in formaldehyde in various containers

(CNN) -- For $900, the winning bid at a Pensacola storage auction got the contents of Unit B12 -- and a police investigation.

Police say body parts belonging to more than 100 people were found stored in formaldehyde inside the unit, in plastic containers, specimen cups, trash bags and even a 32-ounce Styrofoam cup from a convenience store. Some of the containers had cracked and leaked, police said.

The discovery was reported to police Friday after the purchaser of the unit began going through the items, said George Klages, manager of Uncle Bob's Storage.

Investigators know the unit was rented by Michael Berkland, a former associate medical examiner, but they're now trying to figure out if a crime was committed, said Capt. David Alexander of the Pensacola Police Department.

He said authorities have made some attempts to reach Berkland, who worked for the Medical Examiner's Office between 1997 and May 2003, when he was fired for failing to complete autopsy reports in a timely manner.

Berkland, who is no longer licensed in Florida, was also at one point a private pathologist, Alexander said. Families would sometimes contact him for second opinions about autopsy decisions that had been rendered, he said.

Police said Klages told them Berkland rented the unit from April 8, 2009, until it was auctioned August 22. He said Berkland was late on rental payments several times during the lease but usually paid right before the unit contents were to be auctioned.

The storage unit also contained office furniture and other property.

Police say the remains are believed to be from autopsies Berkland did between 1997 and 2007 at funeral homes in Pensacola, Tallahassee, Fort Walton Beach and Panama City. Some of the containers had labels with names and autopsy dates but others did not.

The remains are now with the Medical Examiner's Office. The Pensacola Police Department said it is not releasing the inventory because some of the decedent families may not be aware of the investigation.

The State Attorney's Office and Medical Examiner's Officer are also taking part in the investigation.

Field of vision. David Pocock. | Imagine Your Lifestyle ? Wealth ...

Australian Wallaby and Western Force flanker and its Captain, author and charity worker, David Pocock, just 23 years old, now has his face on a commemorative postage stamp, recognition for both his performance over 40 tests and his tireless charity work.

He was 2011 Western Australia?s Young Australian of the Year, again for his rugby prowess and his commitment to the charity he founded, EightyTwenty Vision.

The star loose forward is an inaugural Western Force player who made his Super Rugby debut as a teenager and quickly established himself as a vital member of the West Australian side. He progressed to international ranks in 2008 and won the 2010 John Eales Medal as the best performing Wallaby. In the past two years he has been amongst elite company as a nominee for the International Rugby Board ?Player of the Year?. He is generally considered in line to become Captain of the Wallabies and most advocates of the game believe it?s just a matter of time, which at 23, he still has plenty of.

In a short period of time, this outstanding up and coming sportsman has not only made an immense impact on the rugby field but his humanitarian efforts have brought hope to disadvantaged communities in his native Zimbabwe.

In 2009 David established the charity, EightyTwenty Vision alongside close friend Luke O?Keefe.

He has worked tirelessly to raise funds for projects focussing on health care for HIV and AIDS sufferers, education for children, food and water security, and human rights. He is also active at the coalface and regularly travels to Africa to assist in projects and ensure they?re delivering real outcomes.

Dave grew up in Zimbabwe, moving to Australia with his family when he was 14. Eightytwenty Vision works with the people of Nkayi, Zimbabwe, helping the community to increase their capacity to sustain themselves and their communities.

Growing up in ?Zim? as he refers to his country of birth ?was not without its challenges?, says David, but ?has been one of the major things that has shaped how I view the world?.

?I obviously had a pretty charmed childhood growing up on a farm with two brothers for playmates and friends. We were allowed to do so many things from driving cars and motor bikes to hunting and making traps to hours of kick, receive in the back garden.

?Zimbabwe has such a diversity of flora and fauna and as a child I was definitely taught to appreciate and understand these things. As an adult this has stayed with me. I am very passionate about wildlife conservation and environmental protection because of this early understanding of the synergy of our planet.?

Living in Zim, Dave experienced the very obvious disparity between the way his family lived and others in their community. ?That difference was especially highlighted when we moved to Australia. Understanding that while farms had been taken from the white farmers they hadn?t been given to the black farm workers who knew how to run them and who could have so benefitted from being given that opportunity ? instead they were given to Mugabe?s political and military allies. This meant that the cycle of poverty was perpetuated and actually worsened. Being born white in Zimbabwe meant that we were able to leave when things turned bad in Zim. It meant we had the opportunity (because of our finances) to come to Australia. Many of the children I grew up with did not have that same opportunity and, being from the Ndbeli people group, they were almost guaranteed a life of struggle.?

Dave sees the work of Eightytwenty Vision as an opportunity to help bring about sustainable and long lasting change, restoring the dignity of people and allowing them to live lives that reflect a hopeful future.

?We believe that a sustainable future is achieved by providing people with the skills necessary to empower themselves and in the future begin to empower other communities. We also understand that such a sustainable future begins with the generosity of others. It is generosity that helps to restore the dignity that is so often lost in times of poverty.

?The role of Eightytwenty as one of upskilling ? endeavouring to enable the community to sustain themselves in the long term. Eightytwenty Vision, for me, is about opening our eyes to see how other people are living, realising that the majority of the world face a very bleak reality, and then look for ways to partner with them to bring change.?

Using his profile as an elite athlete has allowed Dave the platform to broadcast his beliefs and promote his cause, but those efforts have sometimes provoked detractors.

?I have had people suggest that we need to take care of our own backyard first and I would agree that there are a lot of problems in Australia which need attention, particularly in terms of the treatment of Indigenous people and migrants.

?In Australia there are systems in place that are meant to provide protection and assistance to people who need it. In Zimbabwe these same systems do not exist. The government and military which are meant to protect people have frequently been used to harm them. And the basic needs of survival are often unmet. This is why I?m willing to not only work hard for the people of Zimbabwe but also lend my profile to their cause.?

Dave?s sense of philanthropy goes deeper than charity. ?I feel it?s my responsibility to use my privilege to help those who do not happen to be born into the same kind of family, class, race as I was. It would be easy just to say that rich and poor countries exist and that?s the way it is and that all we can do is try to alleviate some of the suffering. But I firmly believe that we, in the developed ?West?, perpetuate a cycle that necessitates other countries experiencing such high levels of poverty. It is this very system we need to reconsider.

?I?ve read so many studies about how ?unhappy? the developed world is ? which is in stark contrast to my recent visits with the community in Nkayi ? who seem to be bursting with joy despite their obvious poverty. While I am always cautious about suggesting people get involved in aid and development work for their own sense of satisfaction I would readily suggest that a great motivator would be honouring your internal sense of injustice about the world by using some of your wealth to help others in need ? this isn?t to make yourself feel better but rather to hold fast to your own integrity.

?In Australia we are perfectly placed to make a tangible difference through our contribution.? iyl

Samsung reveals Galaxy Note II

2 hrs.

Fresh off a legal battle with Apple, Samsung is announcing a new version of the Galaxy Note, an offbeat, oversized smartphone that's become a surprise hit.

Samsung, the world's largest maker of phones, is revealing the Galaxy Note II at a trade show in Berlin. The 5.5-inch screen is narrower but longer than on the first version. The processor is faster, and the software has been further adapted for the included stylus ? the phone's signature feature.

While Apple has been releasing a new smartphone model each year, Samsung makes several to target different types of customers. That includes low-end phones for price-conscious customers. As a result, Samsung has been selling more smartphones than Apple this year.

The Note runs on Google's Android operating system but isn't among the phones that Apple is asking a judge to ban from the U.S., after a jury in California ruled last week that some of Samsung's Android phones violated Apple patents. The jury awarded Apple $1 billion in damages in a high-profile case that could force Samsung and other Android phone makers to rethink their designs.

The Note is designed to work well with a stylus for jotting notes and drawing on a screen, while styluses for other devices tend to be an afterthought. The Note's large screen also makes the phone more like a tablet and more suitable for playing games and consuming content. Samsung started selling a tablet version of the Note this month.

Samsung Electronics Co. says it has shipped 10 million first-generation Galaxy Note smartphone in one year.

Samsung says the new phone will go on sale in Europe and Asia in October. It did not say when it would launch with a U.S. carrier.

Edwards refutes rumors of move to Penske Racing

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Carl Edwards dismissed a rumor Wednesday that he will join Penske Racing next season.

Edwards brought the rumor up unprompted during a national teleconference in an effort to silence the discussion. He is in the first year of a new contract with Roush Fenway Racing, but there has been speculation he is trying to negotiate an out to take the opening at Penske.

"There's been a lot of talk about me driving the 22 car, that's impossible," Edwards said. "First of all, I haven't discussed that with anyone ever. And, (number) two, I am contracted to drive the 99 car."

Edwards said he felt he should address the rumor because sponsors have heard the talk and have asked the driver his plans.

Edwards went through lengthy contract negotiations last season with Roush and decided in August to stay with the No. 99 team. He ended the year tied with Tony Stewart in the championship race, but lost the title on a tiebreaker.

This season has been a struggle. He's winless and in danger of not even qualifying for the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. That is apparently fueled the speculation that he's got a performance clause in his Roush contract that would permit him to leave the organization.

With Penske Racing switching to Ford next season ? Edwards is a centerpiece of Ford's marketing campaign ? it's made sense that there could be interest in the No. 22 seat that opened when AJ Allmendinger was released after a failed drug test.

But, it's believed team owner Roger Penske is close to announcing a deal with Joey Logano. Penske said Saturday at Bristol that Logano is a candidate for the ride, and J.D. Gibbs admitted Logano is looking at other opportunities outside of Joe Gibbs Racing.

Reved Up all set for the Adopt A Retired Greyhound On 01142 8883000

The most tuned up hound for the Grade A5 Adopt A Retired Greyhound On 01142 8883000 is the two-year-old black dog, Reved Up. His form is suspected to intimidate the rest of the line-up that has been attracted to the 500 metres flat race on Tuesday, 28th August at Sheffield. Taking their chance with bagging the prize money are Zig Zag Crossing, Shellys Shadow, Black Tanner, White Socks and Smoking Tony.

Since the last four races, the ranking of Broadacres Turbo?s son has fluctuated but even that has remained under a certain benchmark, a winning, two second positions and a third place.

The P. Sanderson trained finished a decent second in the Grade A5 www.sheffieldretiredgreyhounds.co.uk on 2nd August, 2012 at Sheffield over 500 metres.

The favourite entry of the race, Fairytales, won the race in 30.38 seconds and set Reved Up as the runner-up while leading by ? of a length. Getting crowded after leashing out from the first gate seems to be the only reason that would have kept the two-year-old from being the first one through the wire.

The black son out of, Lady Sharan, then tried his luck in a 500 metres race at Sheffield on 10th August, 2012. He ended third as the Grade A5 Betfred Bookmakers Race was won by, Mucky Rising, in 30.53 seconds.

Reved Up got through after racing for 30.57 seconds.

The black hound born on 24th May, 2010 then won the Grade A5 500 metres flat on 17th August, 2012 at Sheffield. Even though he did not get a chance to stay prominent throughout the race, he led just close to the line and timed the distance in 30.27 seconds.

Winning by the margin of just a short head?s difference had Shellys Shadow taking 30.27 seconds to settle the racing affair.

The two-year-old failed in sustaining the form and lost the Grade A5 500 metres flat race on 21st August, 2012 at Sheffield to a second position. He missed the race by ? of a length and took 30.22 seconds to cross the wire while the winner, Dishy Deb, had the race under her belt in 30.16 seconds.

The dark hound should make the most out of the chance that he has tonight.

Facebook Israel-Arab youth group has rare meeting

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A Facebook-based movement for Mideast youth says the group has held its first gathering, bringing young activists from Israel and Arab countries to Germany to promote peace.

Nimrod Ben-Zeev of the YaLa-Young Leaders group says 18 members from Israel, the Palestinian territories, Tunisia, Algeria, Lebanon, Egypt, Sudan, Iraq and Kuwait met in Berlin over the weekend.

Ben-Zeev, an Israeli, said the group was selected from the most active of YaLa's 162,000 Facebook members.

Meetings between Israelis and citizens of Arab nations are rare. Except for Egypt and the Palestinians, none of those represented have diplomatic ties with Israel.

Ben-Zeev said Monday the movement wants to empower Middle Eastern youths to work together to improve their communities. It plans an online university next year.

Poor monsoon rains hit millions of Indian farmers

KATHURA, India (AP) ? The farmer walks past muddy fields of stunted sugarcane and damaged rice paddies as a light drizzle falls. "Too late, too late," he says of the rains he has been praying for since many weeks ago.

For nearly two months, Satyavan Narwal's eyes scoured the heavens looking for the monsoon rains that would nourish his crops, but he found nothing and was left with parched earth. Now monsoon showers are soaking the fields ? but late August is much too late for him.

This year's fickle monsoon has played havoc with millions of Indian farmers. The showers, which normally run from June to September, are crucial in a country where 60 percent of the population works in agriculture and less than half the farmland is irrigated.

"Here farming is entirely on God's mercy. If nature doesn't bless us, the farmer can't do anything," Narwal says.

India's Meteorological Department has said it expects the country to get at least 10 percent less rain this year than during a normal monsoon, but large parts of the country have been hit much harder.

In the northwestern state of Haryana, where Narwal's family has farmed for generations, rainfall is less than half what it should have been. And when the rains finally did come, the crops were already nearly dead, fit only to be used as animal feed.

Shriveled old men share a water pipe and one of them points to the skies and shouts "What now, brother?" as they watch men and women carry damaged sugar cane to feed to their cattle. At the edge of fields, young men stand, hands on hips, shaking their heads in dismay. The village is 140 kilometers (87 miles) northwest of New Delhi.

By now the sugar cane crop should have been at least eight feet tall (2.4 meters tall). Rice paddy crops would have been lush and emerald green. Small patches of pearl millet, corn and sorghum would have dotted the landscape.

But the sun shone on with determination through all of July and most of August so that the cane is now only knee-high at best and most of the rice crop is burnt.

The lack of monsoon rains has also been partly to blame for the worst blackout in world history, which cut power to half of India last month. Large-scale farmers were using extra power to pump water from deep aquifers, and little electricity was being generated by hydropower projects.

Across the country rains in June and July ? a crucial time for farmers ? were nearly 20 percent below normal.

"Now some of the crop is so dry and damaged even our cattle won't eat it," says farmer Mahinder Singh, as he watches over the cleaning up of his sugar cane fields.

Punjab, the unofficial breadbasket of India, has received less than 40 percent of the rain it should have. Large swaths of western Gujarat and Maharashtra have been declared drought-stricken.

The government has said it's not worried about food scarcity because millions of tons of rice and wheat from earlier bumper harvests are spilling out of state-owned granaries.

But for the average farmer, who lives and earns from season to season, a poor monsoon means that food must be carefully rationed because he has little money to spend.

With dreams of a good harvest, most small- and medium-scale farmers borrow money, often at exorbitant interest rates, from local money lenders to buy seeds and fertilizers and hire tractors to plow the fields.

"Now even they won't give farmers money. They know there are no crops so there's no chance of recovery," said Ranbir Singh, as he cleaned up his three acres of dead sugarcane.

He already has to pay off loans of 300,000 rupees ($5,400), a fortune for a poor farmer.

"Now I will need to borrow more money to feed myself, but lenders will hold back," he said.

With nearly 70 percent of India's population living in rural areas, farming is vital to the economy. A poor monsoon is expected to further dampen already disappointing growth this year, according Citigroup economist Rohini Malkani.

Poor agricultural output could result in growth as low as 5.4 percent in the current fiscal year, down from the bank's earlier estimates of 6.4 percent, according to the economist's August report.

"If drought conditions worsen, headline growth could come in lower at 4.9 percent," she writes.

The federal government and many state governments have hesitated to declare a drought for fear of causing panic and because it requires them to assess each farmers' losses and compensate them.

Farmers in Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh state, which have not been given declarations of drought, are losing patience.

"What will it take for the government to declare a drought?" asks Narwal. "Will all the farmers have to die first?"

Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said Cabinet ministers would meet later this week to discuss the impact of the poor monsoon.

In Kathura village, however, Pankaj Aggarwal, the top district official, brushes aside talk of a drought, saying that the few recent days of rain will revive the crops.

Meanwhile, farmers lament the lack of government investment in irrigation and other infrastructure that could protect farmers from the vagaries of the monsoon.

"Where are the irrigation canals, the irrigation pumps, the electricity supply that the government keeps promising the farmers?" asked Dharmendra Malik, a farmer and activist in Uttar Pradesh.

"You have food grains in your stocks so you're not worried, but that doesn't mean you abandon 600 million of your people who tend the fields," he said.

Monthly Tags | #15 ? March 2012 - Scrapbook Update

I?m efforting to get caught up with my monthly tag series, since it?s almost time to make #20 in a few days! I was able to finish #15 over the weekend, and I tried a technique on it that I?ve been dying to try for quite awhile.

March 2012 tag

Supplies:

also: Mark Richards adhesive rhinestones (3mm Lt Pink), My Minds Eye 6?6 paper pad (Reunion ? exclusive to Michaels Stores), Recollections rhinestones (swirl), Celebrate It by Michaels ribbon (Sheer Creations ? black), Martha Stewart for Avery labels (Staples exclusive).

March 2012 was a big month for our family. My husband finally got the transfer close to home to a low custody facility that we?d been waiting six months for (well, really that we?d been waiting 15 months for, but he?d been on the waiting list officially for 6 months). ?I wanted this tag to have some special elements to reflect that event.

The first element that I selected was the map paper to cut the tag with. It seemed an appropriate foundation for this tag, since the theme of the month was travel. My husband spent two weeks traveling all over the state of Florida to finally arrive at his new DOC home. This particular paper is from October Afternoon?s Sasparilla collection.

The next element that I selected for the design was the butterfly. It represents the ?fluttering around? my husband did traveling, and also the increased level of freedom at his destination. For this element I used a feature of my Tim Holtz Alterations Tag & Bookplates die that I rarely take advantage of ? its Mover & Shaper capability. When I cut the tag, I placed the Tim Holtz Alterations butterfly Mover & Shaper magnetic die into the tag die, so after cutting I was left with a tag that had a butterfly shaped hole in it.

I cut the hole out because I wanted to try the faux epoxy technique that Tim Holtz used on his day four tag of the 12 Tags of Christmas last year for the number 25. I?ve been dying to try that technique ever since I saw him use it on that tag, but it took me awhile to find the right project!

To create the depth that I needed for the technique, I left the tag & butterfly dies put together, and cut a second tag from a scrap of chipboard. Then I use Claudine Hellmuth?s Matte Multi Medium to laminate the two tag pieces together. Once they were done drying, I ?closed? the window behind the butterfly cut-out by cutting a piece of paper from the 6?6 paper pad and using Multi Medium to adhere it to the back of the tag behind the butterfly.

The next step was to add the bling that makes the body of the butterfly. Fortunately I had the right size rhinestones to make the body out of exactly 3 rhinestones, to represent Mike, Bridget and I, and how we have more freedom to be a family again now.

Butterfly close-up

Once the rhinestones were in place, it was time to fill the butterfly with Glossy Accents. I very carefully worked it into the curves of the design, and around the rhinestones, making sure not to fill higher than the top of the rhinestones. I ended up with one bubble that dried funky that I probably should have dealt with but it dried naturally very well. I let it sit overnight before working any more with it after applying the Glossy Accents so that it would have plenty of time to cure well.

Tag close-up

After the butterfly, the rest of the tag was fairly quick! I layered some labels and stamped the date on them with the Hero Arts ?Make A Date? clear stamp set, along with a small block of patterned paper to anchor the Bingo chip for the number of the month. That left me with a large amount of white space. I didn?t really want to completely fill it, but it was bugging me ? so I settled on putting some texture into it with the swirl of rhinestones. The light touch added just the right amount of interest without overwhelming that space and unbalancing my tag.

The finishing touches were the reinforcer for the hole and the ribbon. I reached for my reliable Tim Holtz Reinforcers stickers and as usual when I?m working on a vintage tag, found the perfect one to use. I settled on the bold black ribbon because I thought the tag needed a dramatic touch and the black emphasized the date and the number tile.

Now, only five more tags to go and I?ll be caught up!

Simplifying genetic codes to look back in time

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? Tokyo Institute of Technology researchers show simpler versions of the universal genetic code can still function in protein synthesis. In addition to understanding early primordial organisms, the research could lead to applications preventing non-natural genetically modified materials from entering the natural world.

Daisuke Kiga and co-workers at the Department of Computational Intelligence and Systems Science at Tokyo Institute of Technology, together with researchers across Japan, have shown that simpler versions of the universal genetic code, created by knocking out certain amino acids, can still function efficiently and accurately in protein synthesis [1].

The researchers conducted experiments altering the genetic code in a test tube. They removed the amino acid tryptophan and discovered that the resulting simplified code could still generate proteins as before.

By knocking out individual amino acids and observing the effects, scientists will be able to understand how early primordial organisms may have functioned and evolved. There will be also numerous applications for simplified genetic strains in laboratory experiments, which could potentially prevent non-natural genetically modified materials from entering the natural world.

Background and future developments

Daisuke Kiga and co-workers of the Department of Computational Intelligence and Systems Science at Tokyo Institute of Technology, together with researchers across Japan, have shown that simpler versions of the universal genetic code -- created by knocking out certain amino acids -- can still function efficiently and accurately in protein synthesis. The researchers conducted cell-free experiments altering the genetic code.

All current life forms on Earth have 20 amino acids in their genetic code. However, scientists believe that this was not always the case, and that organisms evolved from simpler genetic codes with fewer amino acids. Amino acids are linked in accordance with codons -- a 3-letter combination of the four base nucleotides (G, A, T and C) in a genetic code. There are 64 possible codons, and so most amino acids are produced by several different codons, except for tryptophan and methionine, which are generated by just one codon each. Tryptophan is thought to be the most recent amino acid to become part of the universal genetic code.

Kiga and his team took the codon for tryptophan, and reassigned it to code for the amino acid alanine instead. They discovered the resulting simplified code could still generate proteins as before. The researchers also reassigned another codon originally for the amino acid cysteine and replaced it with serine. This simplified code without cysteine was able to synthesize an active enzyme.

By knocking out individual amino acids and observing the effects, scientists will be able to understand how early primordial organisms may have functioned and evolved. There are also numerous applications for simplified genetic codes in laboratory experiments and clinical trials.

Before emergence of the current universal genetic code, primitive organisms that may have used only 19 amino acids could benefit from horizontal gene transfer, where cells transfer genetic material between one another. This is a key method used by bacteria to develop resistance to drugs. An organism with the current universal genetic code for 20 amino acids would have competitive advantages in its ability to synthesize proteins, but could not engage in genetic transfer with the rest of the population. Only when a suitably large gene pool of organisms with 20 amino acids is available could horizontal transfer occur between these life forms and they could then thrive. This implies that organisms with a simpler genetic code could be used as a barrier in laboratory experiments, preventing new genetically modified strains from escaping to the natural world.

Key Pakistani Taliban figure killed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A NATO airstrike in eastern Afghanistan killed a dozen militants including a senior leader of the Taliban in Pakistan, the international military coalition said Saturday, dealing a blow to armed extremists operating on both sides of the countries' porous border.

The strike in Afghanistan's eastern Kunar province killed Mullah Dadullah, the self-proclaimed Taliban leader in Pakistan's Bajur tribal area that lies across the border, late Friday afternoon, coalition spokesman Maj. Martyn Crighton said.

Dadullah reportedly took over after Bajur's former Pakistani Taliban leader, Maulvi Faqir Mohammed, fled to Afghanistan to avoid Pakistani army operations.

He was responsible for the movement of fighters and weapons, as well as attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, a coalition statement said Saturday. It added that Dadullah's deputy, identified only as Shakir, was also killed in the strike along with 10 other militants, and that an assessment made in conjunction with Afghan security forces determined no civilians had been killed or injured.

The airstrike was in Kunar's Shigal district, which lies about 15 kilometers (about nine miles) from the Pakistani border, but Crighton would not say whether an unmanned drone or manned aircraft had launched the missiles.

A spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban, Ahsanullah Ahsan, said Dadullah was killed in a drone strike in Kunar. He said Maulana Abu Bakar has been named as the new chief of the Bajur region.

Pakistani intelligence officials said Dadullah and 19 others were killed in the attack. Initially, they said the strike was on Pakistani territory, but later they conceded it was in Afghanistan.

Militant hideouts along the Afghan-Pakistan border have been a source of tension for both governments as well as for the coalition, with each saying the others are not doing enough to expel the various pro-Taliban factions.

The Pakistani intelligence officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media, said Friday's coalition airstrike occurred after a cross-border attack by Pakistani Taliban militants who came from Afghanistan. The Pakistani intelligence officials said the militiamen and army soldiers fought the militants for hours but eventually repelled the attack.

Jahangir Azam Khattak, a local Pakistani government official, said dozens of militants attacked a Pakistani post manned by anti-Taliban militiamen in the Salarzai area of Bajur. He said six militants were killed and four tribesmen were wounded.

However, Crighton said there was no coordination between Pakistani and coalition military leaders on the airstrike.

"This was an independent operation and not associated with any others," he said.

Taliban-affiliated militants operate on both sides of the porous border, with various groups targeting both coalition forces in Afghanistan and the Pakistani military.

Pakistan has complained of cross-border attacks by militants hiding out in eastern Afghanistan and has criticized Afghan and U.S.-led coalition forces for not doing enough to stop them or expel them from Afghan territory.

The U.S. and Afghanistan, however, have long criticized Pakistan for its failure to prevent militants from carrying out attacks in the opposite direction.

A Kunar provincial government spokesman, Wasifullah Wasifi, said four wounded Pakistani citizens have been hospitalized in Kunar and will be questioned about the activities of the Taliban inside Afghan territory.

"They were exactly where this incident happened yesterday, so I am sure they were with these who were killed," Wasifi said. He added, "We are trying to find out how long these people have been here and why they were here."

Two new terms needed in the management of advanced prostate ...

Posted on by Sitemaster

It is rapidly becoming apparent that we are going to need two simple, new terms to be able to use in discussion of the evolution of progressive prostate cancer after ?standard? forms of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) have failed to work. So ? anyone got some good suggestions?

In the first place, the term, ?castration-resistant prostate cancer? is clearly no longer accurate (whether it was ever a good term or not). This term was coined, not so long ago, to describe men who had progressive disease after treatment with:

  • ?Standard? ADT, meaning?bilateral orchiectomy (surgical castration) or single-agent, continuous LHRH agonist therapy or continuous LHRH + antiandrogen therapy or almost any form of intermittent ADT and
  • Continous use of LHRH + antiandrogen therapy in any man who had?stopped responding to?single-agent LHRH therapy or any form of intermittent ADT and
  • Subsequent antiandrogen withdrawal

However, it is now clear that such men are not necessarily ?castration resistant? (i.e., unresponsive to hormonal therapies) because many of them clearly still respond to therapy with the new hormonally active agents like abiraterone acetate and enzalutamide. We need a new term to describe this set of men (who are still naive to drugs like abiraterone acetate and enzalutamide). Other terms that have been use to describe this condition in the past (regardless of whether the patients had metastatic disease or not) include ?hormone refractory prostate cancer? (HRPC) and ?androgen-independent prostate cancer? (AIPC). Neither of these terms is going to be appropriate either.

The other set of patients who are going to need to be defined are those men who have progressive disease after all known forms of hormonal manipulation, including all those described above as well as men progressing after treatment with drugs like

  • Ketoconazole and itraconazole
  • Low-dose estrogens
  • Abiraterone acetate
  • Enzalutamide

It may be that we should resusciate the term ?hormone refractory? to imply this set of patients, but there may be better terms. As just one example, the hormonal axis on which all hormonal therapy for prostate cancer is based is the so-called ?hypothalamic?pituitary?adrenal? (HPA) axis. If a patient becomes refractory to all attempts to manipulate the functions of that axis, perhaps we should define their condition?as ?HPA axis therapy resistant? or ?HPA axis therapy refractory? prostate cancer (HTRPC?).

Anyway ? now?s your chance to get creative!

Recreating the Olympics on a Galaxy Note

You may remember the Olympics, it had rather a lot of coverage world wide. Well our very own Leigh Geary was invited by Samsung along with a few other people to document parts of the Olympics using only a Galaxy Note.

This year during the London 2012 Olympic Games, we teamed up with some bloggers and creative animators to create a series of unique videos of the Games from a spectators? point of view.

This video was directed by Leigh Geary, a tech blogger from CoolSmartphone. With the GALAXY Note in his hands, Leigh and his creative partner for the day came up with a concept to capture the Japan vs. Egypt football match day using cartoons animation. Leigh was especially excited knowing his four-year-old son at home would be able to enjoy it too.

The GALAXY Note was used to create sketches and photos that made it in to this video.

Here is the making of video, which as expected shows lots of shots of the Galaxy Note.

This year at the Olympic Games, we invited four bloggers, Andrew, Derek, Graham and Leigh, to experience the excitement of the Games through the GALAXY Note.

When watching the Japan vs. Egypt football match, each of the bloggers was paired with a creative partner to come up with a concept for an animated video that would capture their personal experience at the match.

All the initial designs, concepts, sketches, imagery and footage were taken using the Samsung Galaxy?Note and then later made into animated shots by a talented group of animators.

Last of all we have the completed video from all of the bloggers.

NLP Newcastle : Your Demons & Angels : Part One ...

Do you ever get annoyed ( technically speaking ? pissed off ) or overly enthused ( technically speaking ? worshipping ) with some people? NLP Newcastle can offer you some challenging and leading to personal open eye expediences. Newcastle NLP offers you this exploration into your own psyche, plus how you can set about changing what you had thought was fixed.

Wish you were more like them or can?t tolerate their views or actions?

Newcastle NLP Training

Newcastle NLP Training

I bet you do and isn?t that great!? So what can you do about this?

Freud, one of the true pioneers of psychotherapy had a student called Carl Jung. In fact Jung was Freud?s protege and at one point Freud Really got pissed off ( a technical term ) with Jung and so Jung went From number one son to pariah in Freud?s world. ? In historical terms the student will eclipse the teacher ? Both Jung and Freud occupied their time in working with the Human psyche.

They both worked with what has come to be known as the Shadow. Their definitions of Shadow are quite different and I will be utilising Jung?s definition of the shadow here. ? The shadow by it?s very definitions is difficult to locate. These are the ?parts? of our personality that have gotten stuck in time, like a lobster in a hole, and have developed their own ways of coping with our life experiences.

Like problematic behaviours, realised or unknown, they can be described as ?outdated? neurological pathways that, under certain circumstances will again and again lead to a type of personal suffering that is manifest in the world. They affect us, they affect you. ? There are essentially three steps to recognising and balancing our Shadow aspects.

Ken Wilber has suggested that we can identify Our Shadow aspects by noticing ( an act of consciousness ) when another person or culture ( this leads to values ) really makes us Angry or makes us desire to be like them.? ? Incidentally, these are both aspects of what Buddhism would refer To as suffering. Is it curious that a two and a half thousand year old spiritual practice has identified these elements of what the modern west? has come to call ?coaching?, ?therapy? and ?self help?? Often without purpose!

These aspect?s that I am going to shortly invite you to write down are and can be described as Either Or Thinking. And I am going to invite you, through exercises, to integrate these seemingly opposite? ( To You ) polarities of values and behaviours. A term to describe this Is Paradox.

And ?By the bowels of Christ? I will offer you a process to do just this. The rest is up to you ? It?s called ?Self-Application? ? OK, before I offer the tasks leading up to this, you may well be asking what is the purpose? Good question!

One purpose is to lead you to a more harmonised life, one with less suffering ( pain ) and one with more understanding and compassion towards others, ultimately your SELF, And this is NOT little ego. This is a step towards big SELF or Atman.

Right, hoping this is not too much intellectualising and your ready to make a change ? OK, here it is. ? Select three people who have pushed your buttons or equally three people who you idolise. Write their names down and then write the Behaviours, Points of View or Attitudes you have either demonised? or hero worshipped just a bit too much and you now recognise it. ? That?s it for now!
