Scoring tower and concession building are almost complete.

A Machine-Pitch District Tournament has been secured for the next ball season, thanks to the construction of a new sports complex at the Colleton County Recreation Center.

?District Baseball Director Ronnie Moore has already said we?ll get the Machine-Pitch District Tournament which will include anywhere from eight to 10 teams here next year,? said Colleton County Parks and Recreation Director Chris Myers said. ?We?ve never been able to get this before, but we have installed electrical outlets within the pitcher?s mounds especially for this purpose. Five additional fields for baseball and softball have been added to the complex. Myers noted one of them will also be used for football, soccer, and other activities.

Myers continued that a sports complex on Hilton Head Island had always managed to get the tournaments in the past. ?We installed the outlets on the mounds especially for this purpose. It was my idea to have the installed. I then discuss the possibility with (Athletic Director) Chris Nelson and (Special Projects Coordinator) Mary Sue Warner. We then asked for this and got the green light on it.? Myers added that he?s proud of this accomplishment. More tournaments such as this would be a boon to our local economy, helping out restaurants, motels, and other businesses.?

Three ball fields were laid with Bermuda sod last month, and the first cutting of these fields began last week. Sod-laying on two remaining fields also began last week. Ackerman Landscape and Irrigation of Walterboro is handling this project, Myers noted. Myers said it is hoped that at least one tournament can be held within the complex before the end of 2012.

A large scorer?s tower that will also be used for announcing purposes and the very ample concessions building are nearing completed. These buildings stand amidst a huge brick-laid courtyard that has several overhead shade-producing structures and large planters within it. Myers said all of the brick-work is complete and the concrete work for the complex was begun.

?We?re still looking at getting most of our football season in on our new multi-purpose field,? Myers said. ?At worst, we will be playing for a majority of the season in, but the worst case scenario, we would begin our season on that field on October 1, but the season actually begins on September 15.?

Myers noted that the contractors working on the complex plan to return all operations completely back over to the county sometime in October.
