Myrtle Frances Boatman (n?e Morton), 92, of Paso Robles, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012. She was born in October 1919, in Arcata, Calif., to Louise Morton (n?e Sauret), a Paso Robles native, and Wilber Morton.
Myrtle was raised in the Oak Flat region of Paso Robles, having graduated from the one room Oak Flat Elementary School, and Paso Robles High School in 1937. Her best childhood memories included Sunday gatherings at the Sauret family farm with her grandmother, who prepared dinner for all of the extended aunts, uncles and cousins.
She met her husband-to-be, Cecil C. Boatman, after high school graduation and they married in 1939. They had six children and raised them in her beloved Paso Robles. After several years of marriage and with a growing family, they built a building at 9th and Park St. in Paso Robles and opened the Furniture Center in 1960. Myrtle and Cecil worked side by side to establish and grow the business. It flourished and in 1985, they purchased land south of Paso Robles on Theater Dr,, and constructed a new building to house Boatman's Furniture Center. In 2004, the family sold the business but it remained a great source of pride to Myrtle.
After her semi-retirement from the business, she devoted herself to many volunteer activities and organizations. She volunteered with the PRHS Library and received a Certificate of Recognition from the Board of Trustees in 1992. She was also recognized as "Volunteer of the Year" from the Economic Opportunity Commission and received Congressional Recognition for her years of service to the North County Hearing Clinic, founded by Dr. Adam Sortini. She was a member of the Paso Robles Quota Club, El Paso de Robles Historical Society, Native Daughters of the Golden West and was a former member of the St. Rose Altar Society. In 2000, Myrtle was selected to be Queen of the Annual Paso Robles Pioneer Day Parade. To be honored in this way by the community that she so loved was a truly crowning moment.
The family would like to thank Mattie and Orly at the Divine Home For the Elderly and the Country Care in Atascadero for the loving care that they gave Mom.
Myrtle is survived by her daughters Lynne Newhouse, Cheryl Parkin and Patricia Barrett; sons Gary (Anna) Boatman and Timothy (Pamellia) Boatman ; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Cecil C. Boatman; mother, Louise Sauret Boyce; stepfather, Alfred J. "Doc" Boyce; son, Steven Alan Boatman; sister, Alice Morton Evans; brother, Bill Morton; and son-in-law, Robert "Bob" Parkin.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Myrtle's name to the Paso Robles Pioneer Day Committee, P.O. Box 262, Paso Robles, CA 93447; or the San Miguel Mission Restoration Fund, Friends of San Miguel Mission, P.O. Box 69, San Miguel, CA 93451.
